What should I do if my toilet won't flush but is not clogged?

If your toilet won’t flush and there’s no visible clog, check the tank parts and water supply. Many no-flush issues come from a closed valve, low tank water, or a loose flapper chain.

Quick checks:

  • Make sure the water supply valve behind the toilet is fully open.
  • Lift the tank lid: confirm water reaches the fill line.
  • Ensure the flapper chain has slight slack and isn’t tangled.
  • Inspect the flapper for wear; replace if warped.
  • Check the handle/lever linkage for looseness.
  • Listen for a hiss after filling; a failing fill valve may need replacement.
